23. Chit-Chat with the Curator: #13 & #14 Before & After Reveal

These two paintings, Lotus Pond by Sa-ard Thanomwongse and Maple Leaves in Autumn by Noparat Livisiddhi are among the very first paintings we hung in our “new” house. After living in very modern glass box of a house for 10 years, we moved to a bigger house full of empty white walls! So in 1984 we commissioned the Lotus Pond, asking Ajarn Sa-ard to paint something in the same style as those beautiful paintings we had seen displayed everywhere in the Felix Aroma Hotel–but we needed it a specific size: 120 x 200 cm, to cover our living room wall.

Our master bedroom also had a huge empty wall, and we saw this autumn forest picture as it was being carried into a gallery at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel, near our office. Nostalgic for New Hampshire autumn foliage, we knew we had to make this one our own!

Later, we continued acquiring new work but from the Northern Impressionists and these two works ended up in my office at Collectibles Corner. The room looked so barren and lifeless without them and I am delighted to get them back, better than new!

Conservationist guidelines:

Problem: The oil in the paint has dried up and the paint layer is cracked and has dust stains.

Solution: Use a chemical to clean the original varnish. Seal the broken paint layer to adhere to the canvas covering the cracks that are distinct. Make a repair and add a new coat of varnish. Clean the frame.

Conservationist guidelines:

Problem: There were dust stains in the uneven surface created by the brush strokes causing the bright color to dim.

Solution

Clean dirt and dust, varnish to protect the image.
