15. Chit-Chat with the Curator: Before & After Reveal #4

The Leaving Sun (1987) by Somkoul Thonglor is my favorite of the 12 pieces we have by him. It was displayed at the Art Exhibition “The Connexion of the Forest’s Heart and the Sea of Beauty” at World Trade Center Bangkok April 24-May 4, 1997 and won a prize. Ajarn Somkoul kept it on display at his art gallery at Fashion Island for many year, refusing to sell it, but he finally relented when Prida said he would give it to me as a birthday present! It is stunning!

“Before”

Problem: The oil paint has become dry and brittle and the entire surface of the painting shows cracking.

Conservation  Steps

Use chemicals to clean the existing varnish – remove the layer of cracked paint and touch up the color.  Seal the layer so it adheres to the canvas thus reducing  the surface cracks.  Apply a new coat of varnish.  Clean the  frame and add  a  back panel to prevent damage from dust, insects or impact coming from the back.

“After”

Brilliant again!
