14. Chit-Chat with the Curator: Before & After #3

Plus Pleung or Spider Lily by Noparat Livisiddhi 1980 is a sentimental favorite. This is the very first painting we ever bought! It was my Christmas present to my husband the year we moved into our house in the suburbs. After the move, he had a much longer commute to work and he got stuck in traffic in front of the Petchburi Gallery on New Petchburi Road every day. When I asked him what he wanted as a Christmas gift, he said the picture in the gallery window that he saw every day! It was the first item we bought from a proper gallery and our first introduction to the work of Noparat Livisiddhi!

The photographer who shot all of the paintings for this Collcorner.com website told me that under the spotlight he saw some of the paintings were deteriorating, but this was in the worst condition! So we told Aj. Kwanjit and her team that to treat this one as VIP!

“Before”

Problem:          The oil paint has become dry and brittle and the entire surface of the painting shows cracking.

Conservation  Steps

Use chemicals to clean the existing varnish – remove the layer of cracked paint and touch up the color.  Seal the layer so it adheres to the canvas thus reducing  the surface cracks.  Apply a new coat of varnish.  Clean the  frame and add a  back panel to prevent damage from dust, insects or impact coming from the back.

“After”

All the worrisome cracks have been repaired and the colors are fresh again!
