13. Chit-Chat with the Curator: Before & After Reveal # 2

Sunflowers by Noparat Livisiddhi was painted in 1980. We visited the artist’s house in Ban Bua Tong and commissioned it for hanging in our dining room. It reminded us of Van Gogh! Two years ago when we sent it for reframing, somebody saw it there and tried to buy it. When the framer told us, we told him it’s not for sale! When AJ. Kwanjit and her team discovered cracks and problems with this one too, we readily agreed to save our old favourite!

“BEFORE”

Problem:  The oil paint has become dry and brittle and the entire surface of the painting shows cracking.

Conservation  Steps

Use chemicals to clean the existing varnish – remove the layer of cracked paint and touch up the color.  Seal the layer so it adheres to the canvas thus reducing  the surface cracks.  Apply a new coat of varnish.  Clean the  frame and add  a  back panel to prevent damage from dust, insects or impact coming from the back.

“AFTER”

Cracks removed, color freshened, the surfaces, front and back, now protected!
