12. Chit-Chat with the Curator: Before & After Reveal # 1

In October 2019, we were advised to “save” 14 items before they crumbled to dust. Ten items were entrusted to expert Conservators at that time, with the additional 4 items to be taken after the first lot was done. I want to show you the results after this 6 month wait!

This is Morning Bloom by Noparat Livisiddhi, purchased in 2000. The oil paints available in those days are not the same quality as today and over time, the oil dries out, causing cracking of the painted surface as can be seen here. The back of this painting was also left unsealed (unprotected) for these many years. The conservators fixed all that!

“BEFORE”

Conservation Steps: Use chemicals to clean the surface and remove the existing varnish. Also remove the cracked paint and touch up the color.

Conservation Steps: Seal the surface with a new coat of varnish.

Conservation Steps: Surface cracks repaired, frame cleaned, the back of the painting has been closed to prevent dust, insects and to cushion any impacts from the back.

“AFTER”

What do you think? We are so pleased!!
