2. Chit-Chat with the Curator: Restoration & Conservation

Time for Restoration Work!

In late October the owners of 333 BaBaBa Gallery on the 3rd floor of River City came for a social visit. Their gallery, unlike our private collection, is a professionally run business frequently organising exhibitions of various types on exciting themes. They make sure that every item they display for sale is in pristine condition and know the importance of Art Restoration and Conservation. They noted that some of our older pieces were showing their age and suggested we invite an Art Conservator to take a look!

We readily agreed, and a few days later, Khun Kwanjit Lertsiri, her husband Khun Suriya and her Conservation Team arrived brandishing flashlights, magnifying glasses and probes!

Their Assessment and Treatment Proposal picked out 14 well-loved items for restoration. These older items were bought in the early 70s when pigments had a different chemical composition from what is used now. The Conservator told us such pigments tend to dry up, crack, and flake as the paint separates from the canvas. Chemical changes in the paper matting also result in stains and discoloration–and as dust and dirt accumulated on the aging (yellowing) varnish, the original colors became dull and lose their vibrancy!

I need to update the “provenance” of each of these 14 items to include details of the “face-lifts” they are undergoing! Stay tuned!
