Ajarn Kwanjit Lertsiri, the renowned Conservator, aims to locate and conserve old maps of Bangkok and Thonburi. She had previously restored several of our paintings and she and her team had visited Collectibles Corner before. It is located on the second floor of Chavanich Building, built by Chuan Chavanich in the 1950s to relocate his company from the crowded Siang Gong area.
He obtained the 1957 Map of Bangkok and kept it hanging in his office. After he died, it was moved to a storeroom and forgotten.
During the Covid hiatus it was rediscovered by his grandchildren, interested in learning about who the the Captain Bush Lane neighbors were 60 years ago.

The map was frayed along the edges and had to be carefully unrolled.

It shows our exact location at 48 Bush Lane, next to the Embassy of Portugal.
Ajarn Kwanjit believed it should be preserved and agreed to take on “Restoration of 1957 Map of Bangkok.” Here is a translation of her Dec. 6 2024 description of what is happening behind the scenes posted on her FB page.
Restoration of 1957 Map of Bangkok.
The old map “Bangkok and Thonburi” printed in 1957 is considered one of the most valuable and important works of national history. With its detailedness that clearly reflects the urban planning structure on both sides, this map is not only geographical evidence but also a reflection of the way of life and urban development in that era.
However, this conservation work is one of our most challenging tasks in the past 2 years and will have to continue for another year. The reason is not only the large size of the map but also the condition of it. The delicate and intricate preservation of this map requires a high level of specialized knowledge, skill and expertise. Cleaning out the fungus, reinforcing the paper and protecting it from further damage requires a combination of traditional techniques and modern technology to ensure that the work remains in pristine condition for future generations.

Historical Value and Future Use
This is not only a challenge for us but also a source of pride to see restoration of this important map for future reference.
The importance of this work is to not only preserve the beauty and delicacy of the map but also to pass on knowledge and value to the circles studying Thai art and history. Preserving this map will allow future generations to study the development of the city and the changes in the past. It is also an important source of information that helps create a deeper understanding of Thailand’s history.
