December 5th, the birthday of Rama IX, has come and gone, but it reminded me of an exhibition and website posting that was inspired by the 60th Anniversary to Rama IX’s Accession to the Throne in 2006. The Rama IX Art Museum Foundation posted a scholarly essay written by Dr. Apinan Poshyananda on “Thai-ness through Six Decades of Modern and Contemporary Art'” with introductory chapter headings for each decade, 1946-2006.
The original link, as you can see if you click Home, required the reader to download the now obsolete “Shockwave Flash” and “Get Flash” to interact with the displays. Never mind! You don’t need those flashes because you can click on this link http://www.rama9art.org/artisan/6decade/1dec.html and manually open the folder for each decade. Click on album to see the images cited in the text and click on artists to see the list of artists related to that period– with links to their best works. It is a very rich sight. (The link to exhibition is not so useful because it refers to the floorpan of the Exhibition at The Queen’s Gallery.)
I have found obtaining information in English about Thai art very difficult. When I first downloaded this in 2006 it seemed like I had finally discovered the encyclopaedia of modern and contemporary Thai art! So just letting you know it is there!
